My Life with Dogs cont'd (Diva the Shihtzu)
Our foreign border is a ten pound shihtzu we have named Diva. I call her the foreign border because she is after all a shihtzu. That makes Diva our little Asian baby. Diva arrived in the summer of 2009. She was surrendered by an owner who said she loved the little dog but had too many pets. (That comment coming from someone who has only two dogs is quite ridiculous as far as I am concerned, but I live in a zoo) Diva had not been treated well or trained for the basics in her previous home, and taking her in meant training her. She caught on quick but is very demanding of attention and expects to be tended to before any of the other pets. It is for this reason we named her Diva. I figured she acts like a Diva so it is the perfect name for her. Diva thinks herself the little mother and is always being scolded for excessive ear washing of the other dogs. She will lick and nibble on poor Harley's ears until they are pink and sopping wet. The up side to this is that Harley has not had an ear infection since Diva arrived. The down side? Dogs with sopping wet ears do not make good cuddle companions. Diva is a funny little dog with a giant personality. She is no longer the shy cowering bundle of nerves she once was. She now runs with the pack in the big backyard and you can tell she is happy with life.
